Today I want to talk about some specific types of fairies starting with: the goblin! 

You might be thinking, “aren’t those the short nasty little creatures in [insert favorite fantasy title here].” Most likely yes! Goblins are used in a lot of media as a stand-in for the dumb, mean, ugly mobs on the side of the antagonist or some natural/nameless evil. Indeed, goblins show up all over European folklore, always as a bad sign, either as a bitter spiteful little jerk at best, or a malevolent beast at worst. There’s even a particular type of goblin called a Redcap that gets its name from the blood it uses to dye its cap. Big yikes!

 

Their cousins, the brownies, are by far much much nicer. These are household spirits who come out to do your chores when you sleep! But even so, they can be kind of finicky. You’d have to leave their favorite snack out somewhere like by a fireplace if you want to convince them to sweep up, typically a little cup of milk, maybe even some cookies, just like you would for Santa Claus! If you try to give them clothes though, they’ll run off and never come back.

However, they’re still proud little creatures. They will play pranks on you if you get lazy and will leave if they think they’re being taken advantage of. So don’t use and abuse brownies to get out of doing your daily chores!

 

There is a type of fairy that sits somewhat in between the previous two called the hobgoblin. While not as malicious as the goblin, they’re not as hard-working as the brownie. Hobgoblins are also extremely mischievous and love pulling practical jokes on people. Sometimes they can be funny, but often, the pranks can go a little too far…
